Future Self vs. Future Life
Have you thought about the difference between your future self and your future life?
I’ve heard the concept of stepping into your future self in many different ways, but one obstacle was thinking that I couldn’t be my future self now because she had a different lifestyle. She’s not working a full-time job for someone else, so I can’t be her while I do because I don’t have the time to live that lifestyle.
But that’s not the point!
Tapping into the power of your future self is visualizing how your future self would act and think if they were dropped into your current life.
Your future self knows how good it is on the other side – that life where everything worked out and you got everything you wanted. They know how to navigate the rough road of conquering your current limiting beliefs and irrational fears. They know without a doubt how strong you are because they made it through.
It’s like that scene in Harry Potter when Harry’s future self was watching the dementors attack him and Sirius, waiting for the rescuer to send the patronus and realizing he is the rescuer and now had the ability to conjure the powerful patronus. He understood he had the capability and stepped into it.
A more entrepreneurial example is when you ask someone ultra successful “If you lost your money, connections and status how would you start over and build success again?” They’ve already seen the end of the movie, they know the plot and they can recreate a successful business. In fact, many have built several million-dollar businesses.
Through visioning, you discover your future self – including the lifestyle they live – so that you can connect with the traits that make them amazing. By accessing their confidence, you build your determination and resilience. You learn to trust your instincts because you can see the success of your future self achieved.
Your future self might have an amazing investment portfolio, but that doesn’t automatically transfer the knowledge of options and future to your current self. You still need to learn the skills and acquire the traits, but your future self can show you what steps to take.
The point is…
If your future self was dropped into your current lifestyle, what would they do to get to your future lifestyle? It’s trusting them to guide you from where you are to where you are going and allowing them to get you there quickly.
I was recently called out (in a very kind and loving way) to shift my focus from learning to doing. My nervous system was highly resistant to taking bold action, but I took time to breathe into my future self. And my intuition knew the next step to take.
Another cool thing about future self work is that your current self is the future self to your past self. (Ok, that’s a little confusing – so read it slowly)
I looked back to the times I trusted in that person I was becoming and took bold action that gave me a significant boost in my growth and evolution.
We need those big boosts to get our attention and stand out from the minutiae of daily life as proof of our potential. Life’s too short to reach our potential without those big bursts. The more bold actions and big bursts we have, the quicker we get to our future self.
Not that you’ll ever achieve your perfect future self-ness, because your future self is always expanding. I don’t know about you, but I want to see how far I can get in this life. And the key to getting to your best future life is by focusing on the characteristics of your future self.
